Assessment for Children and Teens

Children can struggle at home and in school for a variety of reasons. To understand the cause of these challenges and find the best ways to help, it is necessary to complete a formal assessment.

During an assessment, a mental health professional will gather information through observations, standardized tests, and other methods to get a clear, full picture of what might be affecting your child. From there, we help you put accommodations and supports into place to enhance your child’s growth and create lasting positive change into their adult years.

The goal of the assessment is to help your child thrive by providing a clear, personalized path for growth and development. Our team will be there every step of the way to support you and your child.

Is An Assessment Really Necessary?

It’s important to understand the full picture of your child; the strengths, struggles, and everything in-between.

By identifying barriers they are facing during their developmental years, you can create a clearer path ahead that better supports their growth, learning, and ability to reach their full potential.

An assessment has the ability to create space for understanding. It allows your child to feel seen, to be heard, and turns uncertainty into clarity.

We want your child to recognize their strengths as superpowers, make sense of their experiences, and feel supported as they move forward in their life with confidence and compassion for themselves.

      How Does Assessment Work?

      1. Intake

In this 1-hour meeting (online or in-person), you will meet with one of our mental health professionals to talk about your child’s background history and current concerns. In collaboration with your psychologist, you will design a personalized plan for the remainder of your child’s assessment ensuring every step meets their unique needs.

      2. Testing

We will conduct an evidence-based assessment through scheduled testing blocks in a setting that is comfortable for your child.

      3. Feedback and Next Steps

Your psychologist will go over the results in a detailed, one-on-one feedback session with recommendations on next steps.

Note: For all clients under the age of 18, the intake appointment is attended by the parent or legal guardian only. The child or youth does not attend this initial session. Consent from a parent or guardian is required prior to proceeding with services.

      Types of Assessment

      Psychoeducational Assessment

Focuses on a child’s cognitive and academic skills, as well as their social and emotional functioning. A psychoeducational assessment includes tests of general intelligence (IQ), attention, memory, reading, writing, and mathematics.

      Possible Diagnosis:

      • Learning Disability (LD)
      • Giftedness
      • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
      • Intellectual Disability
      Mental Health Assessment

Designed for children experiencing difficulties that are affecting their mental health and/or quality of life. The mental health assessment highlights the challenges your child is facing and provides personalized support and treatment.

      Possible Diagnosis:

      • Anxiety
      • Depression
      • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
      • Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)

      Other assessments that we offer:

      • ADHD Assessment
      • Autism Assessment
      • Gifted Assessment
      • Neuropsychological Assessment

A formal diagnosis is often required to access school and work-based accommodations. The psychoeducational assessment will provide practical strategies to support your child’s success at school, at home, and can guide the development of their Individual Program Plan (IPP)

Each assessment varies greatly in the amount of time required for completion and the process will be adjusted to suit your child’s specific needs.

Appointments are paid after each individual session and a deposit is not required.
