Shirley Meijaard
Shirley is a Registered Social Worker who obtained her Master’s of Clinical Social Work with a specialization in infant, child and adolescent mental health from the University of Calgary and Honors Bachelor of Social Work from Lakehead University. Shirley is also a Registered Play Therapist with Association for Play Therapy and training to be a Certified Play Therapist with the Canadian Association for Play Therapy (CAPT).
Shirley has dedicated the past 8 years to working collaboratively with children and their families in a variety of community settings including: drop in youth centre, youth secure custody, women shelter, elementary and high schools, youth probation, child protection and most recently outpatient mental health. Shirley is committed to ongoing professional development has become a certified Circles of Security Facilitator, and has completed training in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), play therapy, synergetic play therapy, and sandplay.
Shirley specializes in treatment with children and adolescent who experience challenges such as: impulse control, attention difficulties, anxiety, sadness, grief and loss, relationship challenges, troubles managing emotions, and managing stress. Shirley is passionate about meeting clients where they are at along with building on their expertise and collaborating together to reach mutual goals.
Shirley has called Airdrie home for the past 4 years with her husband and two dogs Willow and Quinn. Shirley enjoys spending time in the outdoors by camping, kayaking, and hiking.
